Coach Joe Vargas:
Well Brandon Cruz, I met him when he started boxing at 12 years old. He used to train at other gyms here in San Diego and he approached me about working with him. He’s a very talented young man. After he got stuck in his training, he wanted to advance and grow a little more, and I think that being here with all the sparring partners that we have here at the gym and teammates, I think he knows he’s in the right place to get a little better in his craft.

Nigel I met about a year and a half ago, he came to San Diego. His coach out there, Gene Floyd out of D.C., reached out and told him if he’s in San Diego to come out to me. Really cool kid, we hit it off. I reached out to him a couple months ago with an opportunity for him to spar the world champion Jaime Munguia in Tijuana. They really took a liking to him, and a couple weeks ago he made the trip out here to come train with us here in San Diego.

As far as the future with these young men, we see Brandon Cruz fighting April 3rd here in San Diego, going on his eighth pro fight. And Mr. Nigel, we’re looking at the end of March, fighting somewhere in Mexico, Guadalajara, Monterey.
