Coach Bryan DeLeon Guerreo:
I moved to San Diego in 2011. When I found out I was getting stationed here, I started looking for gyms. I came across The Arena and immediately loved the vibe. I put on the gi, fell in love with it, started competing, and I got my brown belt under Baret, September 2020. Baret messaged me one night, we want to offer you the opportunity to coach the Fundamentals Gi Program and right away, I said, “Yeah.”

It wasn’t my first time teaching. I was a drill instructor from 2015 all the way to 2019 when I got out of the Marine Corps. That helped a lot, being able to instruct and having the confidence, understanding how to carry my myself as an instructor, a professional, as an athlete. I kind of translated that same mentality of discipline, holding yourself to a high standard, constantly challenging yourself, and just applied that straight into Jiu Jitsu. And I feel like that’s the biggest thing that helped me find success in teaching and competing and just being a student overall.

My long term goal is to, of course, obtain my black belt under Master Baret Yoshida, and carry on his teachings wherever I go. It would be nice to share it to people at home in Saipan. Jiu Jitsu’s huge in Guam, and it would be nice to bring our island to that level. Ultimately, if I were able to make that happen, I would be satisfied.
