Arena Boxing Coach Joe Vargas discusses the absolute BATTLE and gigantic heart shown by Jesus Ricky Perez last weekend on the Golden Boy card in San Diego. Ricky accepted against a very skilled and larger fighter and showed the true heart of a lion. Stayed on him the whole fight and won the crowd over. Couldn’t do enough to get the nod but sometimes big risk will eventually lead to a big reward.

Coach Joe Vargas:

Last week we had a fight with Ricky Perez on the Golden Boy Card here in San Diego against Alexis Rocha. It’s an opportunity we took short notice. We fight at a smaller weight division. We took a risk, we knew what we were getting into.

Everybody was thinking we were going to get knocked out within the second, third round. I told Ricky that he was going to be in some deep water, so when the fight started the first three, four rounds, it was a hard fight. He went back in the second phase of the fight and not that he won, but he won the crowd over with his heart. He tried everything he could. He just couldn’t get that big guy out.

The promotion company, they were so content, so happy with the outcome of the fight that we sat down and we’re negotiating a new contract with them because of Ricky Perez’s bravery and guts. And we appreciate the opportunity. And sometimes you don’t get an opportunity unless you take a big risk. And that’s what we did. We took a risk and hopefully it’s going to have a nice reward at the end.
